Concept
From the same team that brought you Shizusan Shophouse & Bar in April this year, Bellona Hospitality brings to Bengaluru the award-winning BAR BAR. Chef Paul Kinny, Deepti Dadlani (Dee) and Tanai Shirali – the Director trio over at Bellona Hospitality, the F&B arm of Phoenix Mills Pvt Ltd – are all set to introduce the novel concept of ‘More of You, Less of the Bill.’ to the city this June after successfully doing so in Pune and Mumbai.
At the heart of the concept is the fundamental idea that drinking in a group is rewarding in many ways, but at BAR BAR it allows you to save money. In other words, the more people on a table the lower the bill! Also being introduced for the first time in the country is the ‘E-Savings Calculator’ tab which enables anyone ordering to see their savings and not just the total bill.
The Drinks
The drinks menu has been categorized into Popular, Premium and Luxury – each category contains a selection of spirits: whisky, vodka, rum, gin and even liqueurs. If the entire group / table sticks to a category and orders at one go, they can hit MWP (Maximum Wholesale Price). At MWP drinks are as low as Rs 99.
Drinking in a group at BAR BAR has many advantages, and one of them is being able to break through the clutter of ‘Happy Hour’ offerings that are usually limited to a few hours and carry a long list of hidden terms and conditions. But at BAR BAR you can create your own deal whenever you want: You can make Every Hour Happy at this gastropub with no limitations in choice by simply ordering in bulk.
Apart from a large variety of spirits, the concept is applicable on signature cocktails, beers, shots and wines too. Top cocktails include Watermelon Coolishka made with Vodka, Watermelon, Lemongrass & Lime, the Spiced Pear Mojito with Pear, Rum & Cinnamon, The Hawaiian, true to its name, with Vodka, Pineapple, Cardamom & Red Bull. Only for Bengaluru is a new category of Bartender’s Bottlesthat for a pocket friendly price of Rs 750 includes a bottle of cocktail (750ml), bar snack, garnish and 3 glasses. Right from the LIIT to super potent Lynchburg and even a fruitier Fruit Loops – this is something that the city has never seen before. Two is company, Three is a Party, Four is Price Less.
The concept further extends to Draught Beer which is served in 3 sizes: 500ml, 1000ml and 3000ml priced at stellar rates of Rs 195, 375 and 849 (for a 3-litre tower!). Beer pints, wines by the glass and shots too can be enjoyed in similar style.
The Food
In true gastro pub style, the food at BAR BAR is drinks-friendly with a dash of innovation by Chef Paul Kinny. The menu at BAR BAR Bengaluru is completely different from Mumbai and Pune, and apart from the usual suspects like Nachos there are bar snacks like Jalapeno & Cheese Popcorn, Double Cooked Pork Belly, Baked Cheesy Masala Crab, a local inspired Mangalorean Mutton, Bruschetta Geniovese, Nuts & Crunch Bhel, Chicken Wings 4 Ways and more. There is a dedicated section from the Tandoor with kebab platters like Paneer Aachari, Tandoori Broccoli, Aachari Jhinga, Fisk Tikka, Tandoori Potatoes, etc. are some of the kebabs that you’ll find on the menu. There is a section of delicious Salads and Grills for the more health conscious drinker as well.
The Thin Crust Pizzas playfully referred to as Bread & Company have interesting options of Red Curried Shrimp, Sundried Tomatoes, Meatball, Baby Arugula and more.
Burgers include Caribbean Cottage Cheese & Oats, Double Tenderloin & Cheese, Bourbon BBQ Ranch Beef, Pulled Pork Burger and the highlight being the Mac & Cheese Burger which brings together the world’s 2 most comforting foods – pasta and burger.
Another novelty in Bengaluru is the Live BBQ Pit in the open air section where diners can watch and order Mediterranean Souvlakis, 8OZ Sirloins, Jumbo Prawns being fired up along withthe group-friendly Mixed Barbecue Platters like Chicken All The Way (Crunchy Jalapeno Chicken Fingers, Sriracha Wings, Chicken Sausages & Chicken Popcorn). The vegetarian’s dream bar platter called Shoots & Roots has Button & Wild Mushrooms, White Wine Baby Potatoes served with Bruschetta of Cherry Tomatoes, Jalapenos& Olives. Fisherman’s Wharf for the seafood lovers,Oink Oink with 4 kinds of pork preparations and Ranch & Wharf–Fillet Mignon, Pan Tossed Shrimps& Panko Crusted Fish served with Onion Rings & Cajun Fries – are some of the others to watch out for.
The mains include Make Your Own Pasta, Laksa Curry Fried Rice, Fish & Chips, Pork Goan Vindaloo, etc, while the dessert section features indulgent options like Chocolate Ganache Fondue, Sundae, Baked New York Cheesecake, Salted Caramel & Espresso Tart and Tiramisu Jar.
The Space
BAR BAR Whitefield is a 150-seater gastropub located on Level 2 of Phoenix Marketcity Whitefield. The space is designed with a vibe of lending itself to a neighbourhood bar with a dash of retro and industrial grunge. There are 2 distinct sections with a large central island bar at the centre of it all. The inspiration for the design is in line with the primary concept of the bar i.e. ‘Wholesale Market’ model with a market-in-market approach. The inside zone includes tables inspired by a Food Market as well as a central Metal Market zone facing the live stage and screen. The live stage and DJ console clearly suggests the commitment to music, which at BAR BAR will be reggae, easy listening, classic rock and Indie.
The outside section is open air looking out at the courtyard and is heavy on wood and plants with a Live BBQ Pit, a mini Library with books to keep guests company, a large Projector for live sport and film screenings.
Some unique décor elements include a storage wall for guests to keep aside their shopping bags, post office drinkers to store their laptop bags before proceeding to their table for a relaxed and fun drinking experience. Some pop Neon LED signages to add to the retro neighbourhood bar vibe.
